LAGO VISTA—The Lago Vista Literature Group will meet Tuesday at K-Oaks Clubhouse to review Steven Johnson’s “The Invention of Air: A Story of Science, Faith, Revolution and the Birth of America.” Light refreshments will be served at 1 p.m., and the book review begins at 1:30 p.m.
Anita Barrick, a local resident and member of the Lago Vista Women’s Club, will review “The Invention of Air.” It is an outstanding account of the radical 18th century scientist Joseph Priestley’s monumental discovery that plants restore “something fundamental”—what we now know as oxygen—to the air.
Johnson also offers an exploration of conditions propitious to scientific innovation and circulation of information through social networks. Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were among members of the networks Priestley belonged to and provided Johnson with some of his strongest material.
Barrick has lived in Lago Vista since 1991. Born and educated in Wurzburg, Germany, she worked many years in process quality control and cancer research as a laboratory technician. Her husband Charles is a geologist, and they have three grown children.
