Four ladies said goodbye to the Lago Vista blue and gold Feb. 9 during the Lady Viking varsity basketball game against the Jarrell Cougars at Viking Hall. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t send them out on a winning note as it fell to the district powerhouse, 65-35.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 24-4 lead on the Lady Vikings in large part to a swarming defense and full court press that forced Lago into turning the ball over before reaching the center court line.
Sharp ball movement, and controlled, high accuracy shots gave the visiting Cougars a comfortable 39-14 lead going into the half. Jarrell’s high-octane outside game knocked down six three-point shots in the half and kept the Vikings from contending throughout the first 16 minutes of play.
“This was a much quicker and athletic team than we are used to seeing,” said coach Jason Stoner. “We had a real difficult time containing the outside game and when we did, Jarrell moved its game to the paint and beat us under the boards.”
The lead differential didn’t change much into the third quarter as Jarrell continued with the press defense that caused numerous turnovers in the backcourt and led to easy baskets for the Cougars. By the end of the quarter, Jarrell held a 54-29 lead that Stoner knew would be difficult to overcome.
“Turnovers have been our weakest point all year, and going into this game we knew that we must play flawless basketball to beat this team,” he said. “Jarrell just played a well executed game tonight and did everything correct.”
Jarrell kept the ball controlling offense and stifling defense going full throttle into the fourth quarter as it held the Lago shooters to six points in the remaining frame to coast to victory this evening.
Alex Wolf put up an all-around solid performance in the loss with 14 points and 15 rebounds to complement three steals. Marissa Whitehead added seven points while Erin Seely grabbed seven rebounds to aid the offensive and defensive efforts.
Suiting up for the Lady Vikings for the last time were seniors Kym Edwards, Kristen Meyer, Marissa Whitehead and Erin Seely. With win totals exceeding last year, senior guard Marissa Whitehead said this team is headed in the right direction.
“I had a personal goal of winning four games in District this season. I am proud that we accomplished that feat,” she said. “We also won more games this year and it is all due to coach Stoner. He made us focus on one goal and one game at a time. He has this team going in the right direction.”
Another graduating senior, Erin Seely, echoed the feelings of her teammate on the status of the team, and explained what Stoner has meant to the girls since taking over as coach two years ago.
“This was a good season. Coach Stoner has really helped us grow better as players and as a team,” she said. “We all learned how to work together as a unit. He is a terrific coach and will have the team playing good basketball next season.”
Though ending with a 10-19 non-conference record and 4-8 in district, the totals exceeded a victory total over the past four years and quadrupled the district victories from a year ago.
“I am extremely proud of how this team continuously improving week to week and playing competitively every night,” Stoner said. “Our team was in more games this year than the past. The program is moving in the right direction.”

Vikes prevail in final season game against Eagles

By C.R. BARNES

Justin Flowers’ half-court pass to Jemarcus Johnson for an easy lay up with seven seconds left on the clock put the Lago Vista varsity basketball team sealed an upset of the Lexington Eagles, 61-59, at home Friday.
Lexington, coming in as the second-ranked team in District 25-2A, found itself in a contentious battle with a feisty Viking squad that was looking to end the season on a positive note.
The Eagles hit a three-point shot with 25 seconds remaining in the contest to tie the score at 59-59. Two missed free throws by the Eagles sealed their fate when Flowers soared for the rebound and found a wide open Johnson for the game-winning basket.
“This isn’t the way you draw the play up but Justin did a fantastic job finding JeMarcus streaking down the court,” said an exuberant coach Dan Boatright. “We finally defeated a team we shouldn’t have beaten. This was a great win for us.”
With a second-place finish in district on the line, Lexington wasted little time making its defense presence known as it shut down the Lago offense throughout the first quarter and limited the Viking shooters to 2 of 12 attempts and ended the quarter leading 14-4.
Lago regained its form while trading baskets back and forth with Lexington for the next eight minutes. Chipping away at the lead, the Vikings were able to dig out of the hole created in the first and enter the half down 30-25.
“I told the boys that they needed to work on effort and composure to beat this team,” Boatright said. “After trailing by 10 in the first and 12 in the second, we relied on self control and working hard to get back into this ballgame.”
Ryan Anderson’s clutch shooting in the third quarter helped Lago stay close to a Lexington squad looking to distance itself at every turn. Anderson knocked down nine of his team-leading 24 points in the frame and helped Lago narrow the deficit to 44-40 as the third quarter ended.
The Vikings took its first lead of the night deep into the fourth after a put-back rebound by C.J. Jacque. The teams traded baskets and free throws to keep the game tied until the remaining 25 seconds finally shut the door on a Lexington comeback.
Jacque, center and lone senior on the team, said going out with a quality win against a district powerhouse was a great way to end a productive and positive season.
“This win was great for our team, coaches and fans,” he said. “It means a lot to win at home in my last game. There is a lot of love on this team, and I can proudly say we played hard all year. I will miss my teammates and coach Boatright, but know they are in good shape for next year.”
With a previous loss to the Jarrell Cougars at home on Feb. 9, 72-50, the Vikings finished the 2009-10 season with a 16-12 overall record and 4-8 in district. Boatright said he knows the team will need to build upon this momentum for next season.
“Winning our last game is a great spring board. We are losing only one senior while returning the bulk of our starters,” he said. “Our work ethic and basketball fundamentals will remain the same as we look to ride that tidal wave to another great season.”

It was a week of highs and lows for the Lago Vista boy’s varsity basketball team as division leader, Jarrell, handed the Vikings a lopsided 76-37 loss last Saturday on the road. The Vikes were coming into the game after surviving a defensive battle with Florence in which the team held on for a 41-32 win at home Jan. 12.
After the narrow victory, Lago was looking for a more convincing win against top ranked Jarrell. The Vikings knew this would be a battle won with defense and held form throughout the first quarter as it kept the high scoring Cougars to just 14 points and trailed 14-10 at the end of the quarter.
Using that same box and man defensive scheme in the second quarter, the Vikings managed to keep the outside shooters of Jarrell off balance and kept turnovers to a minimum while ending the half down only 10 points.
“Jarrell is a very smart team and fundamentally, the team does things right all the time,” Boatright said. “We did a good job keeping them in check and the defense played well to keep us in the game.”
The second half, however, didn’t match the first as the Cougars offense caught fire and outscored Lago 25-12 in the third quarter that put the game out of contention. With Jarrell holding a comfortable 56-32 lead heading into the final quarter, the Vikings couldn’t contain the outside shooting of Jarrell’s top scorers as they combined to put up 25 of the games 45 points in the second half to double up the Vikings.
“The two big guns for Jarrell came out in the second half and lit up the scoreboard,” Boatright said. “Between the two players, they accounted for 25 second half points. This just took the wind right out of our sails.”
Jarrell was able to contain any offense that Lago mustered, especially in the second half, as the team held the Vikings to just five points in the last quarter to easily put the game away. For the game, the Vikings were led by Jemarcus Johnson who contributed 14 points in the losing effort. The Vikings also got double digit scoring from Justin Flowers who added 10.
There was a stark contrast between the Vikings team that played Jarrell from the team that showed up to beat Florence just three days earlier. On a night where points were hard to come by and came in spurts, the Vikings held back a strong second half push from Florence to capture the second conference win.
The first half marked the lowest scoring output for either team this season, as both squads turned the ball over continuously to end the first quarter with Florence leading 3-4. It wasn’t until the last two minutes of the half when Lago Vista took the first lead of the game. Down 5-6 with 1:50 remaining, the Vikings went on a 10-1 run to end the half with a 13-7 lead.
“I told the boys at the break that a tidal wave was coming. It didn’t come as I expected, but it did come in big spurts that allowed us to separate from Florence,” Boatright said. “I didn’t expect this game to be as close as it turned out to be. We did enough as a team to get a win tonight.”
The third quarter saw the lead go back and forth between the Buffalos and Vikings. Each team used a fast break offense and smothering defense, to hold the scoring to 11 points for both teams to end the 3rd with a 24-18 Lago lead.
With the game down to the last 12, each team went on their own run to close the deficit. The Buffalos went on a 10-0 run to close the score to 31-28 with 4 minutes remaining. Not to be outdone, the Vikings ran off the next 8 points to separate the game with 55 seconds remaining and end any chance of a Florence comeback.
For the season, the teams record stands at 14-8 overall with a 2-3 record in district play. The team will next be in action at home when they host the Academy Bees on Jan.26th at Viking Hall.

After dropping five of its last six games, the Lady Viking varsity basketball team closed out its non-conference schedule in style by winning the consolation championship at the Lexington Invitational Tournament Dec. 10-12, improving its non-conference record to 4-8.
The Lady Vikes opened the tournament with a 43-34 loss to the Giddings Buffaloes Dec. 10 before closing out the weekend in style by defeating the Caldwell Hornets, 36-30, to reach the finals, following with a 33-22 win over the Taylor Ducks to claim the championship bracket.
After starting strong against the undefeated Giddings team, the Lady Vikings saw their lead slowly getting chipped away as the stronger and faster Buffalo squad took control of the game in the second half and put down any Lago comeback.
“We lost to a talented and undefeated Giddings team by only nine points,” said head coach Jason Stoner. “Our defense was really consistent throughout the whole game. We played them a lot closer than the score indicated.”
Offensively, the team received strong performances from Alex Wolf and Erin Seely with nine points apiece. On the defensive side, Wolf, Kacie Feebo and Kym Edward grabbed six boards to pace the Lady Vikings. Marisa Whitehead led the team with four steals while contributing six points in the losing effort.
Relegated to the loser’s bracket after the first round, the Lady Vikings aimed their sights on 3A powerhouse Caldwell on Friday. As it struggled for points early in the contest and found themselves down late in the game, Lago rallied in the final minutes to upend the Hornets.
“Our team showed a lot of guts and determination to come back and beat Caldwell. We could have easily given up in the final minutes, but we regained our composure and took a win away,” Stoner said.
Once again, Wolf proved to be the difference in the game as she put the majority of her team leading 14 points late in the fourth quarter. Edwards and Whitehead set the tone and matched one another all evening with six rebounds and six points each.
In the championship game, the Lady Vikes came out determined not to let another game get away from them as some have in the past. A swarming defense forced numerous turnovers and limited the Ducks to a mere six points at the half. With the game in control going into the third quarter, the Vikings used an aggressive ball control game plan that never saw their lead fall below 10 points.
“I was happy the girls got to look and feel what it is like to win again,” Stoner said. “We have been getting better at controlling our mistakes and capitalizing on those of our opponents.”
Going into the tournament, the Lady Vikings were coming off their second straight defeat, 43-37, to a Vandegrift team on Dec. 8 that came into the meeting with an 11-2 record with only two losses against 5A schools. After falling to them the previous week by 22 points, the Vikes nearly overcame a fourth-quarter, 12-point lead to claim victory.
The loss gave the team and Stoner some prospective and a sense of accomplishment that served the team well as they headed into the Lexington Tournament.
“I was as pleased as you can be with a loss to a tough Vandegrift team. Our team showed a lot of heart to fight through adversity and I was impressed with how well our defense was starting to gel together,” Stoner said. “I continue to preach to the girls that we are close to getting where we need to be and I truly believe that.”

Vikes tally win over St. Andrew’s after loss to Rouse Raiders

The Lago Vista varsity basketball team managed to hang onto a 53-50 victory over St. Andrew’s Friday after a loss to the Rouse Raiders earlier in the week.
Coming off a tough 81-63 loss from the Rouse Raiders on Dec. 8, the Vikings used a balanced offensive output from their starting five to hold the Knights and claim their seventh victory of the season against only four losses.
Sam Rubbelke’s 12 points combined with teammates Justin Flowers and JeMarcus Johnson with 10 points apiece broke through a stingy Knight defense. Defensively, Johnson and C.J. Jacque pulled down nine rebounds with three steals to pace the team.
“This was a very good team effort for us against St. Andrew’s. Our aggressiveness and focus allowed us to keep the pressure late in the game and finally wore them down,” said head coach Dan Boatright.
The Vikings jumped to an early 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but went ice cold in the second as they managed only two points on 1 of 14 shooting for the field. With the Knights holding onto a 23-22 halftime lead, the Vikings came storming out in the third and put up 18 points in the third quarter while holding the Knights to just five baskets.
“We were fortunate to have a deep bench this evening,” Boatright said. “We were able to fight back every time we got down.”
The Knights were able to outscore the Vikings once again in the fourth quarter, but this time the defense held on to preserve the victory in the final two minutes of the game. The improvement in each game leading up to district is one that Boatright said tests this young team against some fierce district opponents.
“We have been fortunate to play against some really skilled teams during our non-conference schedule. With just one senior and nine juniors, this is a very young team that has taken awhile to learn patience on offense and pressure teams into committing turnovers on defense,” he said.
The victory over St. Andrew’s was a welcome sight after coming back from a 19-point defeat against Rouse Dec. 8 on the road. The Vikings frustrated their coach by falling behind early and often and not adjusting their tempo to keep up with the faster Raider team.
“We fell behind to them in every quarter, but managed to chip away at the deficit until the third quarter,” Boatright said. “They had a huge momentum swing after the half that buried us. Hopefully, with games like this, we can use them as a building block to teach us to take advantage of the opportunities that we create and minimize mental lapses.”
Lago managed to take an early 28-24 lead at the break on Rouse before they stormed ahead in the second half and put the game out of reach. Rouse went on the offensive on slot in the second half that left the Vikings bewildered and confused.
Lago Vista faces five more non-conference opponents before district play begins in January. The patience and confidence of this young team will be tested as two district foes are ranked in the top 20 of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
“We have faced some really good competition up to now with our non-district schedule,” Boatright said. “Jarrell and Academy are both ranked high in the state and will be a formidable opponent to beat for district. We certainly will have our work cut out for us.”
The team faces Johnson City Friday before participating in the Thorndale Individual Tournament Dec. 28-30.
“We hope to use these last few non-conference games to help us prepare for the new season within district that is about to face us,” Boatright said.

Losing by margins closer than the score indicates has beset the Lago Vista varsity girls basketball team early this season.

Losing by margins closer than the score indicates has beset the Lago Vista varsity girls basketball team early this season. The Lady Vikings dropped two more competitive games at the Johnson City Basketball Tournament Dec. 3-5 as they fell to Blanco, 43-33, and Canyon Lake, 55-40, before rebounding in the consolation game to defeat district foe Florence, 50-39.
The Lady Vikes—losing six straight before beating Florence—earned a seventh-place finish and praise from girls head coach Jason Stoner on the team’s improvement.
“Every game gives us an opportunity to improve on our game plan,” he said. “The last thing I want this team to do is dwell on the previous game’s performance and lose sight of our next game on the schedule.”
Lago Vista opened the tournament against district contender Blanco and kept the game extremely close while carrying a lead into the final period. Blanco’s full-court press finally broke the Lady Vikings during the decisive fourth period as it forced them into multiple turnovers and extra possessions for the Panthers.
The Vikes got an all around effort against the Panthers from Alex Wolf and Kym Edwards. Wolf put herself into every offensive and defensive category as she provided 11 points, 13 rebounds and seven steals. Edwards scored seven points with eight rebounds and five steals.
Next up, the Lady Vikings faced 3A opponent Canyon Lake. Keeping it close again, Lago was besieged by similar mental mistakes in the final period in the loss.
“We played competitively against a bigger school. The effort from the girls was there all night,” Stoner said. “We just got caught up in making too many mistakes with forced passes, not matching up on defense and traveling that gave them the opportunity to take control of the game in the end.”
Against Canyon Lake, Wolf set the tone with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Edwards added seven points and eight rebounds. Defensively, Mayer led the team with seven steals and five points.
Lago faced a familiar opponent in the Florence Buffaloes for the consolation game. The Lady Vikings jumped out early and held a two-point lead going into second half.
“We went into the Florence game looking to reduce our mistakes and we did that by only committing 18 errors, which was down a great deal compared to the other games in this tournament,” Stoner said.
Wolf saved her best performance of the tourney against the Buffalos with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jenn Hollingsworth’s nine points and six boards—along with Erin Seely’s seven points and eight rebounds—came up big for the Lady Vikings to improve the team record to 2-6.
As a prelude to the tournament, the Lady Vikings lost to Rouse for the second time within a week Dec. 1, 45-36. But the team improved from a 24-point loss for its previous against Rouse Nov. 23.
“This game showed me that the intensity and enthusiasm on our team is beginning to show through,” Stoner said of the second Rouse game. “We attacked the ball and executed our game plan well all night long.”
The Vikings held onto the lead midway through the third period before a defensive adjustment by the Raiders forced the Vikings to commit multiple turnovers. Rouse slowly took the lead before ending the game with a six-point run to end any comeback.
“We are focused on performing well within our conference and competing for a district title,” Stoner said.
The Lady Vikings will be on the road this weekend for the Lexington Varsity Tournament. The team opens district play at home Dec. 15 against the Lexington Eagles.

The Lago Vista varsity basketball team made it to the championship game for the second time in as many tournaments as it lost the final game to the Hondo Owls, 62-54, in the Navarro Varsity Basketball Tournament Dec. 3-5.
To reach the finals, the Vikings narrowly defeated the Runge Yellow Jackets, 50-48, on a three-pointer at the buzzer from guard Ryan Anderson to move them into the winner’s bracket before dispatching the host Navarro Panthers 64-57 to reach the finals.
Led by the scoring of JeMarcus Johnson with 15 points and Justin Flowers with 12, the Vikings kept the game close to the fourth period when the pressure defense and containment around the boards kept the Vikings from closing the gap and recapturing the lead. Ryan Anderson kept the game close going into the final period by contributing key offensive rebounds. Anderson ended the game with 12 points and a team high seven boards. Both Anderson and Johnson were selected to the all-tournament team for outstanding play during the weekend.
“J.J. and Ryan played extremely well for us throughout the entire tournament and deserved to be selected to the all-tourney team,” said head coach Dan Boatright, adding, “Justin and C.J. Jacque raised the level of their games that was a real boost to our team.”
Jacque finished the game with 12 point and six rebounds. Sam Rubbelke kept pace with his teammate with nine boards against a tough Hondo team that didn’t drop a game the entire tournament.
The Vikings relied on the steady hand of Anderson to get them into the winner’s bracket with his clutch shot that sealed the come from behind victory for the Vikings over Runge on Friday evening. Anderson went into the final minutes with three points but doubled that effort on a single shot that propelled his team to victory. Johnson provided the bulk of the team’s offense Friday with 22 points. Austin Terry and Michael Arvizu added 7 points each to close out the second half and erase a 10-point lead by the Yellow Jackets.
“The team really stepped up in that first game against Runge to get us onto the second round,” Boatright said. “J.J. really hit some clutch shots, and along with Michael and Austin, carried us the whole game. I was really proud of the effort given by the team. We used a balanced attack on offense and played strong in the paint to contain their leading scorer.”
Reaching the championship game was not as nerve racking for the Vikings as the contest against Runge. The team used a consistent game plan and limited turnovers in the rematch with a Navarro team that defeated them a week earlier, 59-52. This time the Vikings had the upper hand as they led from the opening tip-off and never looked back in turning away the Panthers’ comeback attempt.
“From the play in the paint from our post players to our outside shooters hitting the mark, we played a much more flawless game this time around against Navarro,” Boatright said. “We were fortunate to rely on our bench all evening and receive the same level of intensity that we got from our starters.”
Flowers put in 18 points to lead all scorers. Johnson and Jacque added 13 points apiece, mostly in the second half. Jacque posted 13 rebounds.
In the prior meeting with Navarro on Nov. 24, the team left with a narrow loss as the Panthers had a strong second half to close out the Vikings by seven. Justin Flowers and JeMarcus Johnson accounted for most of the scoring this night as they together dropped 27 and 15 points to lead the Vikings.
The team was going into the Navarro tournament on the heal of a close fought game in a a 59-51 win over Bruceville-Eddy Dec. 1. The Vikings relied on a more balanced attack this evening as points were distributed equally.
“Our chemistry as a team is starting to come together as evident in this victory against Bruceville-Eddy and the last two tournaments,” Boatright said. “I can see the guys coming together and playing well rounded defense as well as getting into a groove with our offense.”
The team will look to build upon its current 6-3 record and use the momentum from its successful non-conference tournament as the Vikes host the Rouse Raiders 8 p.m. Friday.
